I am playing on a very very minimal modpack (basically just GT6) and have been slowly but steadily progressing. Unfortunately due to the entity cramming mechanic my sheep etc. keep dying, but not because i don’t have enough space in the pen: the pen is fine but whenever I hold wheat they all bunch up and inevitably take damage and die. Is there some machine that is intended to fix this problem or some tech that has been developed to get around it?

in this particular case, i would recommend upping the limit or disabling it.
Another workaround - use grass instead of wheat. Sheep don’t follow grass but still eat it. By grass I mean knife-cutted grass.

Animals are trending to go to one corner of your pen as explained in Pi’s video
So even with very big pen and without you holding wheat your sheep can still take damage
You can use hotspring water to heal your sheep.

Use crops to get cotton, strings, wool.
Maybe u will need crops++ i do not remember.
Mob farms i think are too laggy.
